Surroundings Still Need to Catch Up with Majestic Hotel
Review From: editorialreviews@nextag.com, Jun 9, 2008
"Built in 1917, the 23-story Renaissance Grand Hotel is a graceful historic throwback with modern upgrades, partly to accommodate the new America's Center at Washington Avenue at Eighth Street. The convention center sits neck and jowl with the Edward Jones Dome, a concert venue and home of the St. Louis Rams.
The location would seem to be perfectly convenient. Part of the Marriott chain, the hotel holds 918 rooms, meeting facilities, and a rooftop ballroom. However, unless you're attending a convention, sporting event or concert, there's not much else to offer in downtown St. Louis except, of course, to visit the nearby Arch. Also, some travelers have reported feeling uncomfortable walking around at night, given the usually deserted streets, vacant buildings, and some vagrants.
For exploration or cheaper dining, guests may want to take advantage of the nearby Metrolink station, which connects to the Lambert St. Louis International Airport and the Mississippi riverfront, or rent a car. Valet parking, at typical Marriott prices, costs about $20 with in-and-out privileges. Self-parking is less, but is not available on the premises.
The staff is largely attentive, but they can be taxed if there's a convention party booked on-site. The bed wins raves, and guests enjoy the gym and pool (the latter may require special guest privileges). Discount nightly rates can often be found. "
