Beach Resort Cleans Up Act

"A recent multi-million dollar renovation seems also to have included an attitude makeover at this beachfront luxury lodging. In the past, the luxury rates really paid more for the sand and ocean bordering the property, rather than the unspectacular rooms and service inside. The change, among others, includes palm trees in the lobby and updated California casual decor in the 340 rooms. Don't expect ornate detailing: The design is all about being laid-back.
What hasn't changed is the fitness center and spa, already fabulous in true SoCal style. That boasts heavy-duty cardio machines and the requisite yoga and Pilates classes, as well as full spa services, steam room, and sauna. The hotel also has a splendid heated outdoor pool, lobby bar, lounge, and restaurant.
The tiny balconies remain the same, and the basic hotel layout still lets guests peek inadvertently into one another's rooms when the shades are pulled back.
As for service, in the past that has ranged wildly from indifferent to warm. It's getting warmer to match the sunny weather, although staffing issues can still mean waits at check-in or poolside. Definitely scour for deals. Also, check with the hotel on its credit card deposit policy, as it is used to charge a chunk of change in advance."
