Great Outdoor Activities but Rooms Could Use Improvement
Review From: NexTag Editorial Review, Jun 9, 2008
Located on the coast of Playa Dorada, the Grand Flamenco Puerto Plata by Occidental is surrounded by beautiful calm waters and an expansive beach. The beach strip, with plenty of sun beds and a snack bar, is only 30 yards from the guest housing quarters. 16 three-story buildings house the 582 guest rooms. The white buildings are spaced out and topped with red terra-cotta tiles to create a village-style look. The guest rooms are spacious and include private balconies or patios with views of the gardens or pool. The rooms feature tile floors and tile accents on the walls for tropical ambiance. The rooms could stand a little upgrading as old furniture and leaky ceilings are a somewhat occasional occurrence. Unlimited food and drinks are included in the resort's all-inclusive plan. With six international restaurants to choose from, there are plenty of dining options. Be sure to make reservations in the morning or even days in advance as space is limited. The resort features two lagoon pools with waterfalls. The main pool offers a swim-up bar and is populated mostly by adults while the other has a children's section. Nighttime activities include shows at the open-air theater and an outdoor disco lasting till three a.m. each morning. With so many outdoor activities, guests are at a loss when the weather takes a turn for the worse. Rainy days are frequent and trap guests in their rooms with little to do. Aside from uncontrollable weather issues, the Grand Flamenco Puerto Plata by Occidental is a relaxing way to spend time in beautiful Playa Dorada.
