Landmark Provides Historic Service
Review From: editorialreviews@nextag.com, Jun 9, 2008
"From the first time one sets eyes upon the Spanish-Moor castle-like facade, one expects royal treatment. Travel & Leisure magazine has listed this 1888 St. Augustine treasure on its top 500, AAA bequeathed its Four Diamond Award, and, best yet, guests nearly always come away impressed by the attentive service and beauty of the place.
Restored in 2000, the hotel does reflect its age in both its old-fashioned grandeur and the relatively smallness of some of the rooms, compared to contemporary American standards (although the shower-only bathrooms win raves for their size and comfort). The premises have 138 guest rooms and suites, outfitted with feather bedding, mahogany furniture, and cozy bathrobes. The walls aren't soundproof, though, so you may hear the neighbors. Luxury suites boast antiques, and its four-story suite once hosted (appropriately enough) Spanish monarchy.
Part of the restoration, about $14 mil worth, went to the oceanfront beach club (guests slowly pay that off with the $10 resort fee). The beach club holds a pool for families and one for adults only, with views of the beach. The food here has won raves.
Valet parking is also charged and, given little available parking in the area, will be another expense tacked on the final bill. Shops, a deli, and 95 Restaurant are on site, which range from touristy to pricy. The bread pudding has been a highlight of many a meal at 95. "
